Apartment Gardening For A One-Year-Old
One of the most fun things about apartment gardening for a one-year-old is that it allows the child to see how much dirt they can gather in such a short amount of time. It’s an ideal developmental milestone for apartment gardening for a one-year-old because they are able to see how much effort and patience it takes just to plant and grow their vegetables. It’s also a good way to introduce children (and adults) to the joys of growing their own vegetables. But when you’re done with your apartment gardening for a one-year-old, don’t expect that your little apartment plants will magically stop growing. Vegetables don’t magically grow overnight; it takes diligent, consistent, small amounts of light on a regular basis for them to continue to grow.
Most apartment gardening for a one-year-old should last from four to six weeks, depending on the size of the apartment building and the age of the child. If you have a fairly large apartment building, you might want to think about waiting until your child is about a year old before attempting to grow your own vegetables. This is because vegetables typically take longer to mature when planted too early.
Most plants require only regular watering, fertilizer, and pest control for optimal growth. Be sure to follow guidelines for soil preparation and use organic materials for your soil. Also be sure that the soil is not too acidic or alkaline. Some plants will naturally take up their own acidic or alkaline soil, but if this is the case in your apartment, add equal parts of acidic and alkaline soil to the building’s soil. This will balance everything out.
After the soil is properly prepared, you’re ready to begin apartment gardening for a one-year-old. You’ll need a handful of baby tomatoes, some baby peppers (small ones will work best), some red onions, some carrots and small handfuls of broccoli. All of these items can be found at a local grocery store. Keep in mind that many fruits and vegetables like onions and carrots can be consumed raw.
Next, get your hands on a good book on vegetable growing. This should include a process-by-step guide and pictures. It should also include the proper planting conditions, fertilizing instructions, and when to plant the different vegetables. These books are surprisingly easy to find and can make apartment gardening for a newborn son or daughter a very simple process.
Once you have the materials, it is time to get started. First, dig a hole about three feet deep and about shoulder width outside of the apartment and place your vegetable seeds inside. Dig a hole about three to four inches deeper and place the soil in. Then place the tomato plants and peppers in the holes and cover them with dirt.
Cover the entire apartment gardening area with dirt. If your apartment building does not have a sprinkler system, you may want to invest in an automatic one. These devices will water the plants from the bottom up as they grow. Most people prefer the drip irrigation system as it controls the amount of water sent to the plants. After the initial work has been completed, you can sit back and watch your plants grow.
When the vegetables have grown, you will notice that there is a difference in taste. The tomatoes and peppers will taste much better than they did before. And your little one will eat the vegetables with much more enthusiasm. Most importantly, you will be able to enjoy fresh, delicious tasting vegetables in a year-old’s apartment. With this simple apartment gardening idea, you will be able to enjoy healthy, nutrient-filled food.
