Finding the Best Perennial Flowers For Calgary
Trying to decide what are the best perennials for a garden can be a bit confusing. Some of them may look great in a flower garden, while others will die out very quickly if planted in the soil. I have done a little research and here are some of the best tips for planting perennials that are beautiful and hardy.
I live in Calgary and have a nice lawn with a lot of hills and trees. In order to get the best of all worlds I needed to plant my flower garden in both the low-lying areas as well as the rocky areas. Perennial flowers that do really well in those areas are Snowdrops, Hellebores and Hostas. They are not as hardy as some other plants, but I have never seen a plant to do well in dry weather.
My wife and I started planting our first flower garden in the spring. We had chosen host and by the end of May they were fully grown. In the months that followed I was plagued with bugs. I spent much of the summer trying to get them under control. That is when I discovered the best perennials for Calgary. Hostas were the first I planted and they did great.
The problem with planting hostas outside is that they require constant watering. If the climate is very hot, you will need to water them often. In addition, there are a lot of weeds around the yard so we used netting to cover the flower beds. This helped keep them out of the grass and kept them nice and lush for the entire summer.
Hellebores come in a variety of colors and bloom at all different times of the year. My daughter loves them as well as her other half. I planted them right next to a corner of the lawn and they brought just the right touch of color to our garden. Hellebores are great plants for the lawn because they like nitrogen-rich soil.
I have also planted roses and a few shrubs over the past few years. All of them went through a transplant and now they are all over the lawn in our front yard. Our neighbors are constantly complimenting me on how beautiful our yard looks. The only downside was that we had to do a lot of trimming throughout the winter. I am content now with the lush green grass and flowers that I have managed to grow.
Of all the plants I planted last year, I am very happy with the bedding plants and annuals that I managed to grow. I know my neighbors are jealous since they have to replant every year. I am able to cut all of my grass down this spring so that I can be on my way to my flower garden in a few weeks. The best perennials for Calgary are the ones that resist heat, drought, insects and harsh weather conditions.
I am going to try out the herb and spice garden in my back yard this year. I have never done anything like it before and am planning on doing most of the work by myself. If I can get the soil to my flower garden that has so much needed moisture and nutrients then I am going to be in for an amazing and hard fought battle with weeds this year.
My neighbour planted mustard and sage in his flower garden and I plan on doing the same this year. I also managed to get a bunch of oregano, which is a perennial, while I was gardening last year. I was quite impressed with oregano’s appearance, its smell and the fact that it was so easy to keep dead leaves off of it. I am planning on making mint my new perennial flower garden’s companion.
My neighbour watered his flower garden, which is now starting to flower, daily. He has also planted radishes, tomatoes, broccoli and cucumbers in his bed. If he had done this when he first started his bed, he might have never noticed that some of his perennial flowers such as hydrangeas, honeysuckle, comfrey and Angelica would not grow very high because they were so short lived. These perennial plants that are so vital to your flower garden will need to be watered often throughout the growing season.
Don’t forget that certain plants need certain conditions to thrive in your Calgary flower garden. If you are planning to plant annuals or perennials, you must make sure that they get enough sunlight and nutrients every day. This will help them to develop strong roots and to survive during the harsh winter months. Don’t forget to check on the soil’s acidity level as well; some plants will need more acidic soil than others, especially if you live in an area where the weather is very dry and unpredictable.
