How to Choose Your Outdoor Plant Racks
Many people love container gardening, as it offers a healthy alternative to traditional garden planning and maintenance. One way to enhance your container garden is with plant racks. They come in a variety of sizes to suit different space requirements. Here’s a general idea of how plant racks work.
A) Plant Racks – How Do They Work? Outdoor plant racks are usually made from resin or metal. The metal varieties are usually stronger and have more load bearing capabilities than the resin varieties. If you live in an apartment, you should consider plastic or resin outdoor plant racks as these both are quite easy to transport from one location to another. The plastic ones can break easily under certain weather conditions and the metal ones are more durable.
B) Plant Stand – What Are the Features to Look For? When choosing a plant stand you need to determine if it is going to be a free-standing rack, which means it will be held up by a support system above the container area. If the rack is free standing, you’ll need to consider where you are going to put the stand. You also have to consider the number of plants you plan to put on the container gardening stand.
C) Cropping Out the Plants When you first buy the plant racks, they will typically have only two or three plants on them. You will have the option of expanding the available plant space by buying additional plants. This is done by unscrewing the fasteners that hold the plant in place. Next, you will have the opportunity to add additional plants if you wish.
D) Grow Space – How Much Space Do You Have? If you are doing small container gardening, you may have enough space to comfortably grow one or two plants on your plant rack. However, if you are doing small, single plant container gardening, you will probably have more options available to you. For instance, if your container gardening has a very limited amount of space, you might choose to buy two plants on a plant rack. This will allow you to fill in the space between them. This is especially helpful if you have space but you know that you won’t be able to plant everything at the same time.
E) Considerations for UV Protection When purchasing the plant racks, you should take a look at the type of UV protection the rack offers. Typically, the ones that are made with UV protection will cost a little bit more money. Some companies also offer their plant racks with UV protectors already included. These types of products are great if you are going to be outside a lot and if you don’t have a problem with exposing your plants to the sun, then this is definitely a good option. You should also look for the racks that offer a way to connect them to your house.
F) Keep Your Plant’s Healthy One of the biggest complaints people have about outdoor gardeners is that they fail to water their plants. A plant rack allows you to keep your plants healthy, by providing a nice area to grow your plants out of the elements. Most of the types of racks offer some type of built-in watering system, so all you need to do is make sure you place the plant rack near a source of water.
G) Consider the Space You Have A plant rack is usually easy enough to assemble, even for people who have little to no building experience. Some types of plant racks are larger, and some are smaller, depending on how much space you have. If you are limited in space, you may want to choose a smaller model. You can always expand the size later on if you start to grow your plants!
