Ornamental Sage
Ornamental Sages or simply ornamental sage, as most of you know them, is one of the most beautiful and tasty herb plants you can grow. It grows easily in many types of soil and conditions, being especially pleasant when planted in a sunny or partially shade garden. The ornamental sage can be placed in your home or in your office for that extra special touch. In this article, I will teach you about planting herbs and other such decorative garden plants.
Ornamental Sages or otherwise known as sage, are very popular garden plants. The ornamental sage comes from the mint family, with which it shares its common name. The herb’s botanical name is Salvia which means to shine; hence, with the Latin name, it is called salvia salviae. The ornamental sage also has the same common name as the English salvia which means salt. The beautiful flowers of the ornamental sage, that come in a multitude of colors, are really quite magnificent and they make a great addition to any kind of landscape.
In order to be able to have ornamental sage plants, you must have an area where the plants can grow and flourish. This means that your garden area should receive some kind of sunlight and also to be free from soil erosion. You can of course go in for perennials and you can plant as many as you want, but the trick is to plant the varieties that need less water and do not need to be fed constantly. These are the varieties that can grow on their own for a long time. You must however bear in mind that all these varieties, regardless of whether they are perennials or otherwise, cannot survive without any form of fertilizer and you should therefore ensure that you provide them with this every time you water or apply any form of fertilizer.
There are basically two kinds of ornamental sage plants and these are the tall-growing ones which come in bunches, and then there are the miniature versions that come in attractive shrubby forms. They are named crenate and orchid and both of these varieties have different colors but bloom in the spring with the white-blue flower ray spreading out from the center. Other than this, there are also varieties that come with pretty pink flowers. It all depends on how you plan to color your flower garden and which flowers you intend to plant. You must also take into consideration the surrounding and the climatic changes in order to decide on the type of ornamental sage you wish to have.
The ornamental sage tends to grow to three feet in height and they will spread in all directions once they have sprouted their long green leaves. The flowers that grow on the large leaf buds are the smallest in size and you have to remember that these flowers look very elegant in their blooming state. If you want to enjoy a peaceful time planting them then you can even plant them in pots and bring them inside after they bloomed. It doesn’t really matter how big they grow because they will still look very good. You can plant these plants either in your garden or along fences because they love to grow in moist soil.
Ornamental sage comes in many varieties and depending on the climate where you live you should be able to grow some of them. The most common varieties are the Orchid sage, Cappuccino sage, Pahoehoe, Dwarf Douglas sage and the Ramble sage. All these plants are known as desert plants and they are native to the areas where the climate is very hot and dry. The plants also need a lot of sunlight, so they should be placed near trees. Ornamental sage can grow in shallow pools or wells and they will bloom in the spring time.
The flowers that bloom on this plant are very large and the flowers look very elegant when they are planted in deep pink or purple colors. They have beautiful petals covered with a cream colored silk. This plant produces a lot of blue flowers which come in different shades. There are also varieties of white-blue flowers which are also very pretty. There are also various kinds of pink and red flowers that come in shades of purple and blue. Each variety has its own name so make sure you know which kind of ornamental sage you are looking at before you buy them.
The best time for planting ornamental sage is during spring since this is the season when they bloom normally. The plants come up just after the flower spikes emerge so you won’t have a hard time finding plants to plant. If you want to make the plants last for a longer period, then you should place them in a cool, shady area. When it comes to the flower spikes, don’t plant them directly on the ground as they will surely die. Plant them about four to six inches away from each other and allow them to bloom naturally.
