Planting a Tomatoes in an apartment
When it comes to apartment gardening the thought of having a tomato plant in your apartment can seem impractical. After all, you really want tomatoes in your apartment to taste better and have larger tomatoes with a bigger head and more tomatoes per plant. But did you know that they do great in apartment settings? There are several reasons why apartment gardening is a great idea.
If space permits you can easily grow tomatoes indoors for just a few dollars. That may sound cheap but you have to consider how little space is needed. In fact, there is no need to have an apartment tomato plant in your apartment. They can be placed on the kitchen windowsill or even on the counter if you place the container on a flat surface. Some varieties can even be placed in a terrace. That makes it very easy to grow indoors if you have the budget.
Another great reason why an apartment tomato plant is a good idea is that they don’t require that much maintenance. All you really need to do is water them once or twice a week. You can’t neglect your plants because they will one day die. But, with the smaller container sizes of the tomato varieties it won’t take too long before you see the results.
When planning your apartment gardening, be sure to plan the size and shape of your container. It’s better to have a square or rectangular shape rather than a round or oval shape. These containers work better than the rounded types because they are easier to handle. They also are smaller and can fit in a tighter space inside an apartment. You’ll need to decide if you want the tomato vines to grow horizontally or vertically. Hanging the vines from the apartment windowsills or even from an apartment balcony can make the task of getting the plant closer to the window easier.
The tomatoes that you plant will need a lot of sun so pay attention to how sunny they get in your apartment. Some varieties of tomato plants will only produce fruit in the summer so think about where you’ll be placing your plants when you are deciding on the amount of sun they get. You’ll also want to place the tomato plants according to their size. The larger the plant the more sun they’ll get but the heavier they will need to be. If the plants are too heavy, you may wind up bending the branches and break them.
Before you plant anything else make sure you have a strong support system. You can provide this support by building a trellis system over your tomato growing area. Other methods of providing support include building tomato cages or using tomato cages that are Styrofoam. But, the best way to provide a steady and level surface for your tomato plant is to use a tomato cage rack. This way all of the weight of the plant is placed on the wire cages.
It’s important to water your tomato plants thoroughly and often. The reason being is because the roots of the plants will try to take any water that is offered to them. Don’t provide your tomato plants with too much water though or else you’ll end up with mushy and dry tomatoes. The other thing you want to avoid doing is covering the tomato plants with dirt. If you do this, your tomato plant will not receive adequate sunlight which will affect the taste and quality of the tomatoes.
Make sure to mulch your apartment planting bed. Mulch keeps the soil cool and allows the nutrients to stay in the soil. Make sure to mulch after you spread the seed of your choice. If you cover the soil before the seedlings sprout it will protect them from the sun and keep the soil moist until they sprout.
